The Calgary High School Theatresports™ Championship
February 24-25, 2012
Registration for the 2012 Calgary High School Theatresports™ Championship is now closed. If you are interested in registering your school for next year's championship, please contact us at hsimprov@improvguild.com.
The Improv Guild is proud to offer a chance for Calgary high school students to develop confidence, creativity and problem-solving skills through the art of improv. This tournament will allow students to participate in the art form under the expert guidance of professional improvisers. The Championship is 100% free to enter and there is $1000 in scholarship money to be won thanks to Chinook Landscaping.
Team work and listening are at the heart of what we do. No class time will be missed by students and this program is designed to enhance existing drama improv curriculum.
- A free workshop for all teachers from Rick Hilton on improvisation instruction methods. Rick is the Artistic Director of the Improv Guild and Producer of the Calgary Improv Festival. He has over 35 years of teaching and performing experience.
- The venue for the competition: the Engineered Air Theatre at the Epcor Centre
- School and championship tournament guides
- A coach to train and mentor students for every school
High schools form and rehearse improv teams. We suggest teams of no more than six. Each school will be paired with a coach who is a professional improviser with the Improv Guild. The coach will train the interested students in basic improv and teach them the rules of
Theatresports™. Then there is a tournament at the school level. This is a great way for the
students to learn the format and a fun way to get the whole school involved as spectators. We will provide each school with a tournament guide package. The players chosen to represent their schools will then attend the championship tournament Feb. 24th to 25th. The tournament will take place Friday evening and Saturday throughout the day. No class will be missed. Schools will not be responsible for transportation or supervision of students. The tournament is 100% free to enter.
The winning team will receive a $1000 Scholarship courtesy of Chinook Landscaping. They will also receive a performance showcase slot in the 5th Annual Calgary International
Improv Festival. The top two teams will receive an invite to Improversity™, a weekend
University of Calgary improv workshop that happens in conjunction with the festival.
